Located along the northerly edge of the 78 Freeway in Oceanside, the El Camino North Shopping Center renovation required a total reconfiguration of parking areas, a major façade remodel, and construction of new retail space. A key objective for McKently Malak Architects was to create a design that would increase the overall leasable area of the center, while simultaneously improving the access, circulation, and parking for the existing tenants. Adding to the challenge was the steep cross-slope and extremely long and narrow shape of the site itself. Portions of the project to be renovated included design elements and materials carefully detailed to tie in with the upgraded architecture of the new buildings. A new freeway sign program was also designed to both complement and reinforce the design of the buildings and create and an aesthetic linkage between the new and old sections of the center.
